People often tend to get very aggressive while negotiating that ‘all-so-important’ deal. And most often than not, spoil it all.
While doing all to not lose your cool is what everybody advises, it also pays to follow certain ‘language cues’ which can help in wading through some difficult situations.
‘Pushing’ your point of view or ‘moving against’ the normal currents will be a lot smooth if you use the following phrases:
While Persuading:
• Proposing:
o “We propose that……”
o “Let us suggest that…”
o “Therefore…….”
o “I have an idea. Let’s…….”
o “How about……”
o “Consider this……………”
• Reasoning:
o “The reasons are……..”
o “Let me explain……”
o “Let’s look at the research………..”
o “Here’s how I see it……..”
o “The data indicate………”
o “Our studies show that……..”
While Asserting:
• Stating Expectations:
o “We want you to….”
o “I need you to…..”
o “I’d like you to do this by……”
o “Please correct this now…….”
• Positive Evaluation:
o “What’s working here for us is……”
o “A and B meet our standards for…..”
o “We are delighted when you………”
• Negative Evaluation:
o “What’s not working is…….”
o “C does not meet our standards for…….”
o “It doesn’t help us when you……”
• Incentive:
o “If your team promises to do A, then we will do B…….”
o “We will offer A if you can do B…”
o “We would be willing to do A, if you would do B…………”
• Pressure:
o “If your team fails to do A, then we will do C..”
o “We would be forced to do A if you can’t do C….”
o “If you can’t do A, then we will have to do C………….”
Note that these examples should be used as guides and not as a prescription. And finally, your own business, culture and personal preferences will help you identify the most effective ways to express yourself while trying to clinch that important deal in the negotiating table.
